Chiropractic services can have a wide range of benefits, including pain reduction, better spinal alignment, an improved ability to lose weight and get healthy, and even an overall improvement in physical and mental health.
What if you’re not interested in chiropractic adjustments for yourself or your spouse, though? What if your child is the one suffering from back problems, or a friend suggested that you go to a chiropractor for your child’s colic or ear infection? Is chiropractic care available for children? How safe is it?
Children and Chiropractors
Chiropractors are well known for treating injuries and chronic pain that is commonly found in adults. However, children – even infants – can suffer from back pain or misalignments, too. In some cases, these issues may even start the moment they’re born.
How so? At birth, babies are very malleable. Infants are pushed and pulled during the birth process, and in some cases this can have long-lasting effects on the infant’s spinal alignment.
The birthing process also can cause a lot of physical or emotional stress on the body, which can also contribute to misalignment. From there, the damage may only get worse if left untreated. Subluxations and stress along the spine will quickly transfer to other areas of the body.
Children with the following conditions or illnesses may benefit from chiropractic care:
- Ear infections
- Growing Pains
- Developmental Disorders
- Injuries from Sports or Play
- Bed wetting
A chiropractor can examine your child’s spine and look for any subluxations. The subluxations can be removed as soon as possible to promote healthy growth of the spine and nervous system.
Controversy over Chiropractic Care for Kids
Of course, we wouldn’t be doing our duty to you without acknowledging the fact that some people do not believe that it’s a good think for kids to receive chiropractic care. Some doctors are even against it due to the fact that children are still growing, and are certainly more fragile than the average adult receiving chiropractic care.
However, studies have shown that there is little risk in sending your child to a chiropractor. Certainly, it is not any higher than the risk of going to a chiropractor – or any other specialized medical professional – as an adult.
Just make sure that you choose a chiropractor who has experience working with infants and children. They will be well aware of the risks of using too much force and know how to adjust their technique accordingly. The force used to gently adjust a child or infant’s spine is very similar to the force used to test a tomato for ripeness.
Still not sure whether or not your child can benefit from chiropractic care? Millions of kids go to a chiropractor with no negative consequences. Talk to your child’s primary care provider. Speak with other parents. Do your own research.
