Patients seeking treatment at iChiropractic and Wellness are assured of receiving only the highest quality of care through the combined use of modern evidence-based medicine and the ancient art of Chinese medicine and acupuncture.

What Is Acupuncture?

Several thousand years ago, Chinese medicine practitioners discovered that the body forms disharmonies as a consequence of being exposed to the various physical and mental stresses of life.  Such disharmonies, defined by Chinese medical theory as imbalances of opposite forces called yin and yang, disturb the movement of the body’s vital energy (called Qi)along its main energy-carrying channels, called meridians. When the Qi flow gets disrupted, the body is no longer in a state of balance, and that eventually shows up as a wide array of health conditions. Acupuncture can correct this disruption of energy.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Through the insertion and manipulation of fine needles into the skin, acupuncture can cause multiple biological responses in the body. Mediated by sensory neurons, some of these responses occur locally, while others take place within many structures of the central and peripheral nervous system. This leads to a release of endorphins (the body’s naturally-produced painkillers) and other neurotransmitters that decrease or eliminate painful sensations, allowing the body to regain its initial state of balance and health.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Yes. Millions of Americans resort to acupuncture every year to treat chronic pain conditions and even mental health disorders such as depression. When practiced by a licensed and experienced practitioner such as Dr. Neil Koppel, acupuncture is 100% safe due to the strict hygienic guidelines that must be adhered to. The needles used by Dr. Koppel are disposable, sterilized, and individually packaged, which means that there is no risk of them touching anything else in the process.

Acupuncturists are also required to undergo extensive training and education, and Dr. Koppel has thousands of hours of clinical experience in Oriental Medicine diagnosis and treatment techniques.

Will Acupuncture Hurt?

Aside from being a 100% safe and natural procedure, acupuncture is also painless. Many first-time patients are worried that acupuncture needles will feel like injections when inserted into the skin. They won’t. Most patients feel a slight pressure when a needle goes in, but the discomfort is far lower compared to an injection, since the needles are hair-thin and flexible. What you do feel as Dr. Koppel gently stimulates the needles along the meridians is a feeling of deep heaviness, numbness, tingling, or mild soreness, which is a sign that the energy flow, or Qi, has been accessed, and that the treatment is working.

Because acupuncture considers the entire body as a whole, it can be beneficial for almost every health condition. In most cases, acupuncture benefits can be augmented by other alternative therapies such as electrical stimulation, massage, trigger point, hot and cold treatments, and paraffin treatments.

What Happens during an Acupuncture Visit at Naples’s iChiropractic and Wellness?

Initial Consultation and Treatment (60-90 minutes)

To determine the type of acupuncture that will help you the most, Dr. Koppel will review your past health and medical history and current symptoms, as well as your lifestyle, concerns, and expectations for treatment. Depending on your condition, Dr. Koppel may ask to examine:

  • The parts of your body that feel painful
  • The color and coating of your tongue
  • The color of your face

This initial evaluation may take between 60 and 90 minutes and is an essential part of the diagnosis process.  Once the initial assessment of the cause and pathology of your condition is completed, Dr. Koppel will recommend a suitable course of treatment and explain how acupuncture will work to relieve your pain.

Returning Treatment (30-60 minutes)

Follow-up acupuncture sessions will start with Dr. Koppel assessing how you felt after the previous treatment and if you have any new concerns. After this initial assessment, Dr. Koppel will ask you to lie on a padded table to proceed with the treatment, which includes:

  • Needle Insertion. In a typical treatment, between 5 and 20 needles will be inserted into your body, which may give you an aching or heavy sensation around the area where the needle is inserted.
  • Needle Manipulation. This step is essential to the therapeutic effectiveness of acupuncture. Depending on the age, build, and disease course of the patient, Dr. Koppel will manipulate the needles to generate different degrees of stimulation intensity and quantity in order to achieve a “DeQi” (the excitation of Qi inside meridians) response in your body.
  • Needle Removal. The needles will remain in your skin for about 10 to 20 minutes while you lie on the table and relax. Removal of acupuncture needles generally doesn’t cause the patient any discomfort.

How Many Acupuncture Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments required depends on the severity of your condition and your body’s response to acupuncture. 1-2 sessions/week for five or six weeks is the normal course of treatment. Dr. Koppel will discuss with you how many treatments you will need and how often you should have them.
