Never been to the chiropractor before? We’re sure you have some questions. Chief among them: What do I bring? What do I wear? and… What will I be doing? Today, we’re going to answer those questions, and give you a quick overview of what to expect at your first appointment.
First, You’ll Fill Out Some Forms
At your first visit, you’ll be asked to provide some information about your medical history and insurance information, just as you would if you were going to any other type of doctor — so be sure to bring your ID and your insurance card. Knowing your medical history helps us customize your care, and identify potential challenges and issues.
To help speed things along, we encourage you to fill out our new patient forms and bring them with you to your first appointment. Also be sure to bring (or send) any relevant medical records or imaging results (X-rays, MRIs, etc.) to our office.
Then, You’ll Have a Brief Exam
When you come back to your exam rooms, we’ll do a brief exam and talk to you about your goals for chiropractic, as well as any issues you may be experiencing. To make the most out of this session, you may want to ask yourself the following questions:
Why are you seeking chiropractic therapy?
Are you seeking treatment for a particular issue or condition?
Where do you feel pain?
What were you doing when this issue began?
How long have you been experiencing it?
Does the pain happen more when you are sedentary or active?
Do you exercise regularly?
Do you maintain a healthy diet?
Do you sit at a desk for long periods of time?
Have you ever been in an auto accident? When, and what happened?
What conditions have you been treated for previously?
Do you have any questions or concerns about chiropractic?
We May Take X-Rays
In most cases, we do an X-ray of your spine before beginning any chiropractic treatment. This helps us identify any underlying issues and risks, so we can develop a comprehensive treatment plan moving forward.
If you’ve had an X-ray of your spine done in the past year, please bring the images to your first appointment, or have them sent to our office.
You Could Begin Chiropractic Treatment that Day
If we’re able to review your X-rays, we’ll likely do adjustments or begin other therapies that day. Not sure what to wear to your first chiropractic session? Loose clothing or athletic wear is beneficial when you’re having an adjustment or performing certain movements — but please wear whatever makes you feel comfortable.
As for what type of therapy you’ll be doing, that will likely depend on your specific condition and goals. You can read about many of our chiropractic services here.
At the end of your appointment, your chiropractor may have some recommended exercises you can do at home to continue your therapy.
At the End, We’ll Talk About Next Steps
After we’ve reviewed your X-rays and medical history, and have done our initial exam, it is likely that we’ll set up another appointment, to go over your treatment plan and payment options — and begin chiropractic treatment.
In terms of payment, we accept most insurance programs and we also take on some worker’s compensation and auto accident cases. If you have little or no insurance coverage, we’ll work with you to arrange a flexible payment plan that works with your budget and your needs.
Future appointments can be scheduled at our office, or you can call us, once you know your schedule.
If you have other questions related to your first appointment, don’t hesitate to call us. We’re here set your mind at ease.
